What sets Michael apart for me is the fact he went to teams that were not front running teams and did great things there - Jordan were backmarkers and he qualified 6th, Benetton were not a front running team when he joined and he won 2 titles there, Ferrari were nothing and he turned them around If you want to make the comparison to Hamilton, he went straight into an extremely competitive McLaren in 07-12 and a Mercedes in 13 that was 2nd best to the Red Bull that year, and then obviously the Mercedes since 14 has been all conquering, he therefore doesn’t deserve the same recognition in my opinion, especially when you consider his attitude as well, he doesn’t behave like a champion, he’s been in a top team for 14 years and yet he whines and always finds something else to blame when he finishes 3rd instead of acting with dignity, champions don’t do that

Oh shut up! He turned Ferrari into a dominating force. He is also partly credited with helping Mercedes be where they are now. Just ask Ross Brawn and Toto Wolff. Michael was a supreme driver. Senna also did questionable things, so did Prost. Pathetic too not give him any credit at all. Oh and Adelaide 1994 was Hill's fault. He made a stupid move.

What made him special, was his complete lack of morals and win at all costs attitude. Illegal driver aids in the '94 Benetton, DQ'd from the Belgium race after illegal skidblock same year. No wonder he reneged on both Jordan and Sauber in order to stay with Benetton and race fixer Briatore. Deliberate crash into Hill in '95. Attempted the same trick in '97 but failed and DQ'd for the whole season. 10 years at Ferarri with strict instructions, ie illegal team orders, for his 'team mates' that they give up their superior positions to Schumacher. Taking these details into account, it makes a mockery of his racing records. In any case, Hamilton will legally rewrite all the records.

Its a disgrace to the sports history and culture that someone like Lewis Hamilton can equal or beat Michael's records, he may beat his records but he will never be Schumacher and nothing but a paper champion, to win 6 titles in the Mercedes has not been an achievment at all, the competition Hamilton has faced is miniscule compared to what Michael had in his career, paper champion vs a real champion, no comparison

    • ajcardiff1

@Leebo88 I hear the scraping sound of someone moving the goalposts.... Which shows more ability: shaping a team around yourself (with the help of Brawn, Byrne and Todt), or just beating everyone? When Schumacher didn't have preferential treatment over his teammates, they beat him. And Hamilton is clearly capable of developing a car, as evidenced by Mercedes's continued dominance through a rule change and the fact that every car he has driven has got better throughout the season. What exactly do you mean by, 'someone like Lewis Hamilton'?

    • Leebo88

      Leebo88

      Maand geleden

@ajcardiff1 Totally different thought aint it, when you build a team up from scratch and you become the leader you have the say in how things go, when you walk into an OP Mercedes and did nothing to build the team up... sorry isnt the same for me.. big difference in someone who worked for his dominant car to someone who lucked into it

    • ajcardiff1

      ajcardiff1

      Maand geleden

How many of Schumacher's teammates were top level? How many were world champions? How many were allowed to beat him? How many were contractually obliged to move over for him? "...to win 6 titles in the Mercedes has not been an achievment [sic] at all" If that were true, Schumacher winning those titles in those Ferraris with a teammate that was forced to hand him points, even when he had outperformed him, is no achievement whatsoever.

Hamilton may one day eclipse Schumacher in terms of numbers, but micheal will always be streets ahead in terms of talent, Hamilton has never really had any opposition, the mercs have been bomb proof, put sebastian or max in one and they would wipe the floor with Lewis, but everyone else has had significantly disadvantaged cars. Micheal fought his way to the top, he jumped back to the bottom, then fought his way back to the top. When Lewis drives like Michael did in spain '96 then I will admit he has class, but until he stops pointing the finger over the radio when his tyres arent to his liking, I will not rate him in the same school as micheal, let alone the same class.

    • Sam Bowen

      Sam Bowen

      Maand geleden

@Harry Whitecross I believe Micheal had a fair few duff ups over his career, lets not forget Damon Hill in '94, I'm not particularly interested in the rights and wrongs of it, but it was so close enough to go for low punches to get to the top, I cant remember the situation for 95 but I seem to remember it was much easier, 96 was a wash out except for Spain and Belgium, for '97, see '94 but insert a Villeneuve instead, and obviously it didn't work out that year, yes '98 and '99 were Hakkinens years, although that said it might have been a lot closer had he not bust his legs at Silverstone. 2000 he was clearly in front, '01 Coulthard gave a brave effort, I dont particularly rate Coulthard in the same way as Hakkinen, but he was an excellent #2 to him. In '03 Raikonnen was 3 points behind I think in the end and Montoya wasn't far behind that if I remember correctly, so with one or two different results things could gave been quite different, in '06 he was within a shout of an 8th championship against Alonso, It was obvious from all the fall out from the Alonso saga, that when he went to McLaren that he was promised then run of the team, even over a standing double world champion, and hes been privileged position ever since, when Button Had an equal car to him in Montreal in '11 he ran away from him, I think in 2018 yes Ferrari did get off to a better start and Merc new it, they managed to develop faster than Ferrari, and with a cheque book called Daimler it helps enormously, by mid season I dont think Ferrari had anything left up their sleeve, against what mercs had lined up, and in Germany I think it was that Ferrari cracked, Vettel made a stupid mistake and the dam was breached, Ferrari had nothing effective in the tanks, combined with Vettel trying to outdrive the car exposed their weakness. I will give them that they certainly paced their upgrades well over the course of the year from Mercedes.

    • Harry Whitecross

      Maand geleden

@Sam Bowen other than hakkinen who did schumacher really fight? I believe hamilton raced against a lot of great drivers in their prime that were way better than the drivers schumi raced overall. You say Lewis hasn't had his "Spain 96" but there are plenty to choose, Britain 08. Everyone likes to say he has the best car, and yes he's been fortunate with his cars over the course of his career, but 2009 is plenty of evidence to prove he can perform in a weaker car. Also he matched alonso on his debut and ferrari was faster in 2018 and hamilton still won hands down

    • Sam Bowen

      Sam Bowen

      Maand geleden

@Rockeye Tom Lewis is good, no doubt, you dont get to, and stay in F1 by luck alone, but tell me, who has been his competition in 6 championships? Mercs wont allow the team mate to fight, only once in the last 8 years and that was because lauda promised them both a championship back in 2012. On his day Vettel is world class, if he had a sid car (which hd hasn't for 5 years) I.e. a merc, his mentality would be astronomical, and he would go out and scour the field, but he has had 1) a lacklustre Ferrari to drive, and 2) a ferrari team around him which are famously temperamental, therefore his German temperament has suffered and hes made a series of idiotic blunders. as for Max he is tied into a Red Bull team who since Vettel left, keep producing great cars, but only get to the party just before last orders is called, so for the first half of the year is thrashing about in a car that is either solidly midfield, but on only a few occasions can muster up just enough to tuck in just behind the mercs, his drive in Brazil a couple of years ago was worthy of Schumacher in Spain, if he had a car to do that every weekend, he would he champion by now. As I said Lewis is good, but I could be good in a merc right now, especially if the rest of the field is kept out if the way for me. The person I really rate is Alonso. If you had a field of Mercs, with Alonso, Vettel, Verstappen, Perez, even Button racing in their prime , I think Alonso would come out ahead by a fraction, but it would be a battle Royale behind, what do you get from Lewis, hes either ahead and untouchable, or hes behind someone when he gets on the radio whinging about someone didn't put his favourite tyres on, or they should only have stopped when he says, or if he has a right paddy and just ignores the team like he did in Mexico when Risberg got ahead. Ges good, but sweet lord hes boring.

Absolute fcuking nonsense! You rate Vettel ahead of Lewis then claim Vettel hasn't provided any competition to Lewis haha what are you on about? Vettel has had the car to challenge Lewis in a few seasons during this era and he's nowhere near. And to say Max, a young 22 year old hot headed maniac would wipe the floor with Lewis, a 6 time world champion in his absolute prime is a complete and utter joke! I'm not arguing Schumi's greatness he was a winning machine but you seriously need to put some respect on Lewis's name. Any genuine F1 fan recognises his greatness.

@Corey Rod Brawn and Shovlin acknowledge that Schumacher was central to Merc's current success. Lewis doesn't build teams like that. If Lewis wins this WDC, that means 6 of his last WDCs rightly belong to Schumacher, with Schumacher on 13 and Lewis still on 1. And that is an accurate reflection on the difference in quality between the two.

5:00 fair dues to lewis getting to that level and indeed he's going to break schumacher's record. but Brundle going down the greatest of all time rabbit hole, with hamilton's name on his lips? tut tut. that's pure british bias. Lewis will be up there, in the top ten. he's not touching the likes of schumacher and senna tho. And all because Lewis has never struggled. he's been in the fastest car almost his entire career and never had to really fight. And the few times he's been forced to fight. he LOST or gave up. Doesn't matter how many titles he wins in an unbeatable car. Winning in bad cars is what makes legends and the greatest of all time conversations.

His consistency and racecraft. I was a McLaren/Hakkinen fan but watching the old races back, i realised why i disliked Schumacher so much at the time. He was incredible. An absolute racing machine. It was very frustrating supporting the other side 😂 It didn't seem to matter the track, the conditions or how the race unfolded. He was there. He always found a way to bring himself into contention, even if the car was slow, he could hang on in a way nobody else could and would always capitalise if things so much as looked like they could fall his way. He could be 15th, a second a lap slower than Hakkinen 10 laps in and you still couldn't count him out from being a threat later on. He made things happen in a way nobody else could.

@jastallion45 Not the same thing mate, Ferrari were not as dominant a car as Mercedes are now. bar 2002 and 2004. What we are talking about here is even Michael had the slower package he was always there pestering annoying outwitting his opponents, doing qualy laps every single lap, his talent is out of this world. Hamilton is an incredible talent dare i say top 5 of all time, but he isn't as good as that. He has had easily the best car for 7 years.

I remember when Rubens out qualified him one time and Schumacher decided to take Rubens car for the race !! Ferrari allowed this because they were totally behind Schumacher. He only got his first title in 1994 because he deliberately crashed into Hill and the Benneton team were known to be cheating with an illegal car. Many of his “wins” were handed to him and are therefore not genuine. The list goes on . I would not put him in the top ten. 🧐

Put Lewis back in mclaren and we might see some fun action, and lewis beating the midfield and making mclaren great again.

Life is not cruel, it's his karma that he has to pay for. Every action we take in this life and previous lives affect our karma, the karma can be good, it can be bad. A King can become a pauper overnight and a pauper can become a King overnight, does schumacher deserve what happened to him? Probably not, no one deserves a vegetative state, I'd rather die than be in the condition that schumacher is in. However he will pay for his karma and eventually come out stronger.

Can't disagree. Although I love Lewis, it comes more from when he was driving for McLaren, often having to get tough overtaking done and often hard racing against good competitors. Back in the day when there wasn't so much of this racing away from everyone at the front. Not saying that's Lewis' fault, though... just circumstances within the sport.

Michael Schumacher is a formula one great but he always said records were there to be broken. If/when Lewis Hamilton breaks his, it will have been due to talent, hard work & his determination to never be happy but always push himself to be better season after season. The same drive that made Michael so great. Of course the car has helped but as it did for Michael after all it is a motorsport. The best drivers always get the best cars that’s just how it works. If Michael were still around the sport he would undoubtedly be very supportive of Lewis’ drive towards unparalleled greatness (as his family have been) so why don’t fans show the same support & respect. Lewis being great doesn’t make Michael less great just as Michael didn’t make Senna or Fangio less great. They are true greats of our sport. Let’s honour & respect them rather then squabble & argue. It’s what Ayrton, Juan, Michael & Lewis would want!

@JW Lol "team game". You know there was a reason why there was controversy after the race and a call for ban on team orders, but you're still giving justification for one race win over the other, being the hypocrite that you are. Whether it's at the start of the season or at the end, a driver shouldn't be given team orders to let another pass even if he has no chance of winning the championship. Where is the excitement in that?! But no, you want to give one preference to a driver for an absurd reason and a subjective one. Moron.

@Hashim Afzal you must've started watching F1 in 2014. 🤡. HE COULDNT WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP, so they made him play the team game. Rubens was 4 races in to a season and was nowhere near losing the championship. How can you not understand that, either you're stupid or you just don't want to understand. By the way, Schumacher is the reason I started watching F1, so that blows your argument out of the water.

@wolfe1970 Some of that's a bit misleading... Hamilton is the same age as Schumacher was when he won his seventh world title and both had competed in the same number of seasons (although technically less for Schumacher as 1991 and 1999 were not full seasons). The win to races ratio you refer to was subsequently distorted by Schumacher's 3 year return to a midfield team in his forties. Schumacher got to his tally of 91 wins in actually fewer races than Hamilton will have competed in when he arrives at win 91. There's lots of ways these things can be interpreted, but frankly stats have to be looked at carefully and put in context. It is not inaccurate to say that Lewis looks set to take these records because of longer seasons, regulation stability and relatively more dominant cars. Lewis has made the most of his talent by capitalising on the opportunities he has had, but Schumacher achievements were every bit as impressive (and to me even more so).

I definitely think he would've walked 2007 with alonso and Hamilton squabbling with each other

A great legend and would have been great if he was at mugello for the race but oh well, and I got to see him at he British gp twice when racing for Mercedes.

@1x2x3xdk I didn't upload the video I didn't ban him for races I didn't disqualify a complete season from his record Schumacher only cared what people thought of him when he retired ie the return whether you like it or not it is fact just watch the video see what some people have to say and what happened at benneton was not aggression. It was out right cheating to gain an advantage

John Enright unfortunately (perhaps this is a pessimistic view) but I feel like if there was something positive to update us on then they would have done so. No reason to keep good news quiet. I take the silence as bad because I can totally understand why they would rather keep the bad news to themselves!

gstfullfocus whether in Michael position or in our situation. We’re all due to be 6ft under. I see your point but I stand firm it’s tasteless. If you was in that scenario. I couldn’t laugh. Instead I would pause and try to reflect how your poor friends and family have to see their son/brother/friend lay awake but lifeless. The little things we take for granted with the loved ones. Cherish it because you never know when it will be taken away.

@Stephen O'Connell he's not having a laugh at Michael's expense though... he made a harsh but real statement. It's a tragedy but it's inevitable.
