Scary crash but serious questions need to be asked of the wheel tethers. We are a mere six/seven races into this season & that’s multiple times already that a wheel has broken off & gone speeding across the track. Compare that to recent years where you could count said incidents on one hand. Thank god the wheel only hit & broke Russell’s tyre & that the halo did its job. Dread to think what could have happened!

There's not too much that can be done about the actual tire coming off the wheelbase though :/

How are F1 going to further improve safety? We don't want flying tyres hitting anyone

Not a lot you can do in this instance. It's not like it was a tire failure or a loose wheel. Unless they make a drastic change to how the tire is fitted to the car so that it stays completely attached to the wheel base, i can't see a lot happening.

Really feel sorry for Giovinazzi as there's nothing he can do. He's in one of the worst cars on the grid and he has Raikkonen as a teammate, not to mention the 3 Ferrari Academy drivers doing well in F2. No matter what he does, it's inevitable that he's losing that Alfa seat. Yes, crashing at Spa for the second year in a row doesn't help but no one seems to notice the massive step in improvement he's made

The fact that the wheel came off is slightly concerning. The halo would protect the driver from a flying wheel, but i don’t want to go back to the days when wheels were flying everywhere after a crash. The drivers safety is paramount....

    • Kratos

      Kratos

      Maand geleden

Hannah Dyson - What a silly question! Of course the Marshall’s as well. Anyone at risk. Or in danger of losing their lives on the track. The wheels shouldn’t be coming off like that in 2020. They’re meant to stay attached to the car in the event of a crash. One hit on the head from a flying wheel is a instant killer. I don’t want to see anyone die.

    • James Bentley

How many tyres have we seen break the tethers this year? Do we need to look at the safety of these and if they are doing the job at these new impact speeds?

@Front Row Reviews Every other driver made it around every other lap without spinning off into the wall there, unless you've some evidence it was a car failure rather than Giovinazzi's error. And no, I'm not saying every driver's going to be perfect, but mistakes at this level, with the frequency and the manner in which Gio makes them, are going to reflect very poorly when Alfa Romeo (and others) consider his future in the sport.

@AJAYORASAV Whats more concerning is it doesnt feel or sound like the FIA are that concerned about it, not heard anything from them about investigations over it, like you said thats now twice this year, and although this was a big crash i wouldn't have said it was enough to rip the tethers off, i hope they dont rely on someone else getting seriously injured or even killed before they look into this more, i love the sport and the crashes add to the thrill, but i want to see everyone walk away from it.

    • AJAYORASAV

      AJAYORASAV

wolfe1970 that is a very fair point. The wheel tethers have come off twice this season, 1st with Magnussen and Albons crash in Silverstone.

@AJAYORASAV I like the Halo and glad F1 has it now to improve safety im just saying the outcome would be the same with or without the Halo, it played no part in offering extra protection to Russel, no tires hit it and no debris hit it, for me the bigger concern is why did Antonio's wheel come off the car, they should be tethered.

    • AJAYORASAV
