EXCLUSIVE: New F1 boss Stefano Domenicali outlines vision and 2021 hopes 🏎️

SUBSCRIBE ► bit.ly/SubscribeSkyF1
New F1 chief Stefano Domenicali has outlined his 2021 goals and his long-term vision in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, insisting that an "incredible" group of drivers "will be at the centre" of the sport's future.
Domenicali, the highly-respected former boss of Ferrari and Lamborghini, officially started work as Formula 1's CEO this month after replacing Chase Carey and, in his first major interview since, opened up to Sky F1's Martin Brundle on why he is so excited about leading F1 into a new era.

This is why the politics of F1 are so corrupt....the red car team always has more say than any other team, are treated differently and allowed to cheat and keep it from being disclosed. I think it is time they are treated like any other team and kept out of management!!!!!

Would love to see Sky Sports F1 series Road to Perfection streamed on F1 TV! Plus make Drive to Survive series available on the platform too. There is a void of F1 from late January to pre-season testing, which keep fans connected to the sport. Just a suggestion for Stefano Domenicali.

What would be the real big mistake? Introducing new race formats. Priorities for the racing: more beautiful cars with better sound and less downforce but still fastest in the world; sort the tracks so they're competitive and not traffic jams of cars; and try and even up the costs so the sport is more accessible. Changing race format has to be outside the top 10.

Great interview hopefully we will get to see a mix of core circuits in the future calendars but with the spicing up of the season with new circuits and old classics returning on a rotational basis to give us some great races like we saw in 2020. The equalling of the grid with the surface issues was a great opportunity to see even more of a demonstration on driver skill instead of the car performance elements which really boasted my enjoyment of the 2020 season. It was right to compliment new drivers and George Russell’s performance standing in for Lewis showed the great skill that we will enjoy watching being developed of the next few years. The races that were so close compared to the last few years were so much more fun to watch. It was great to see the podium welcome racers we did not expect to see, whilst of course I am taking nothing away from Lewis’s brilliant achievements. Hopefully the races we will see will be as edge of your seat as we saw in 2020. Naturally it is always a shame to say farewell to a few great racers and my heart goes out to Romain Grosjean who survived that remarkable accident, but the returned to the circuit to thank the team and provide such an impressive interview that it will take a lot to match it - a great character was shown and I hope he will be able to return at some stage so that is not his parting memory of this sport. This remarkable outcome was also a great example of the developments of safety that go back decades with greats like Prof Sid Watkins and others that mean serious incidents are now the rarity unlike in the early days. I was a doubter of the halo which came as a result of the scrutiny and continuous improvement ethos after the Massa loose tyre incident, around the time we saw another racer also lose their life in similar circumstances I am sure it played a major part in saving Romain’s life during those heart-stopping moments in Bahrain. Formula 1 has great potential to continue to push for safety improvements both within the sport and also in normal road vehicles. Hopefully Stefano and the team will continue to push for even more safety improvements to the sport and wider motoring industry through this vitally required work. The one area I would like to provide feedback on is the programme of events for trackside fans, when we are able to return we need to enhance the trackside experience for fans whether this is more between session entertainment or the adding of additional support events on track such as Formula W to also make the event better value for money. We need to showcase the potential diversity of motorsports and we so nearly saw a female take to the grid a couple years ago but I would like to see the diversity not just be on ethnicity or nationality but also gender. These support races also presents an opportunity to the FIA and F1 to also grow motorsport fan interest in wider motorsports including club level and lower tiered championships seeing the talent of the future develop whilst helping support the great circuits we have around the country. The talk of more people/ unnamed manufacturers interested in joining the grid is great news and the development of in car technology I believe that potential to be further enhanced. Not sure if an electric F1 would go down well as you have to have that noise but if through motorsports we can see manufacturers identifying opportunity to develop in areas such battery technology this can only be a good more for motorists who will want to see rapid charging and vastly improved distances for electric vehicles moving forward. Finally something not mentioned was the work done almost a year ago with F1 teams stepping up with great engineering support as we entered the pandemic to develop new ventilators and CPAP machines. F1 showed a great ability to diversify and are a great inspiration to companies that may also now look at F1 as a motivator for product diversification also as an industry that shows great resilience as demonstrated by the short notice change to the race calendar including the challenges of circuits that were new or that lacked comprehensive data. If Stefano and his team and the wider F1 collective continue to show such versatility, respect, control, leadership and an ability to problem solve / diversify I am sure that it will have a great future whilst attracting some old doubters to come around as reborn F1 fans.

    • Michael Sullivan

      Michael Sullivan

      Maand geleden

Truth! Being mindful of heart is good. Propaganda has no place at all. Formula 1 is necessarily a meritocracy. It's about the cream rising to the top. To put any artificial control over the natural selection of talent is unworkable and insulting to the spirit of competition. In reality Formula 1 is probably second only to Soccer/Football in diversity. And considering that only 20 folks get to drive the cars, it should be purely about talent and skill, looking for quotas or even expectations on who drives the cars is ludicrous. It shouldn't even be about money. But it always has played a part, so expecting that to change... perhaps eventually. More diversity is great, but forced diversity is an abomination in an operation focusing on talent and skill! All sports are a diversion from the negativity inherent in society. Sports give folks a weekend, day or afternoon to forget about the troubles of the world. Any time that spell is broken by unnecessary worries, people tune out. It has gone very poorly for other sports that have caved in to "societal issues". Some have lost more than half their fans. Should "We race as one" continue in it's present form? Yes. Any more than that? Decidedly no! Please keep sport about sport.

@Paul Gooddy I know what you mean; he’s a genuinely very nice chap which - as an F1 team principal - doesn’t always seem to fit the profile. But I think that most of what people considered to be tameness or weakness in Stefano during his time with Ferrari was often just the fact that he presided over the team during a time when they were consistently outclassed (and sometimes severely) by the likes of “upstarts” like Red Bull and McLaren. The results they produced during those times were meagre in comparison to their heyday but impressive when viewed against the backdrop of the strength of their opponents. Anyway - with Stefano and Jenson back in F1, times are certainly looking more interesting and positive in this fan’s opinion. 👍

Even if all he does is get the start time back 10 minutes, back to traditional time of on the hour and removes the razzmatazz and Americanisation of the sport will be a good start.

If F1 is truly committed to the ‘We race as one’ agenda then they need to back it up with action. I’m talking about the Mazepin situation. The guy is a disgrace and should not be allowed anywhere near an F1 car. However, it seems, given Haas’ current financial situation, principles are being put to one side in favour of Daddy’s money. If F1 are serious then they should insist on Haas giving Mazepin the boot and helping out with some degree of financial assistance in the short term. Actions speak louder than words. We all want diversity within the sport. Stop wittering on about taking the knee or not taking the knee - that is a gesture with which people should have the right to choose and not bullied into doing one or the other. What we need is serious action and sorting out Mazepin would be a great way to show that this kind of behaviour has no place in F1; setting an example to society in general that it doesn’t matter who you are, treating people with respect is non -negotiable. Start as you mean to go on.

    • Michael Sullivan

      Michael Sullivan

      Maand geleden

Though I fail to see where and how Mazepin fits, in any way, into the "We race as one" diversity issue, I, personally, agree that having Mazepin in F1 is questionable at best. I too feel he is not an acceptable ambassador for the sport. And, it would appear, just simply a "poor sport". But, realistically, the circumstances of his alleged transgressions are only partly known to us. I suspect that he will be on a VERY short leash and if he even farts the wrong way it will be the door for him. He will have to spend his entire F1 career on his absolute best behavior. I do appreciate that Haas (Sky and virtually everyone) are depriving him of any publicity. He will be a shadow, an unmentionable, until he has gained and or earned some respect. He will most assuredly have to grow up fast or he will be gone fast. I mean there are, no doubt, much better drivers that can fill his seat at Haas. Lets see how the cookie crumbles. (Emphasis on the word "crumbles"!)

Sport without supporters is nothing, sadly the future is Pay to view in whatever form. If you are a fan, you'll find a way. TBH the Sky Coverage is worth every penny. And you can use Now TV if you don't want to line Murdocks pockets.

@Zen Re: One good race, which Russell indirectly ruined himself by leaving his radio on, does not make anyone Hamilton's equal. By that logic Maldonado is better than most of the grid this year
