He can complain all he wants , that racing point is still only a 2019 rebadged mercedes , you can draw something as much as you want but if they are still just copies of a original given by mercedes its not right , its not fair to all those teams who do such a hard job to design their own cars

Lawrence saying that the teams protesting the verdict are only doing so because RP have been a strong team this year and getting really good results is spot on. If RP were lying in and around 7th to 9th place then Renault and Ferrari would be doing nothing as they are the teams who have gone through with the appeal

Has anyone on here actually READ the relevant regulations, or steward's report? No? "1. Articles 2.1 and 3.2 of the SRs require teams to demonstrate, upon demand, that their cars are compliant with the SRs. Therefore, in response to Renault's protests, Racing Point is required to demonstrate that the BDs used in the RP20 are compliant with the SRs. Because BDs are LPs under the SRs, that means Racing Point must show that the RP20's BDs were 'designed by it' (SRs, Appendix 6, paragraph 1). 2. The fact that those BDs were designed in 2019, and that under the 2019 SRs BDs were non‐LPs, makes no difference. The SRs require a team to use in the Championship only LPs that were 'designed by it'. It does not matter when they were designed; whenever they were designed, they have to have been 'designed by it,' within the meaning of SRs Appendix 6, paragraph 1. For this reason, Racing Point's argument that the SRs did not come into effect until the day before P1 at the first Grand Prix of the year is irrelevant. 3. The SRs are and always have been clear that a team is prohibited from receiving any information from another team (or from any other source) about the other team's LPs (including without limitation data, designs and drawings). The reason for the prohibition, obviously, is that the FIA does not want the team to use that information in the design of its own LPs. This is a bright‐line rule: if you use data, designs and drawings (including computer‐aided design (CAD) models, which are effectively digital 3D designs and drawings) of another team's LPs to develop your own LPs, then your resulting LPs are not designed by you for purposes of SR Appendix 6, paragraph 1." Racing Point didn't even contest this point. Their main defence centred around Mercedes CAD data being considered 'input data', with the actual 'design' process beginning after that point, resulting in a final product that should be considered an original Racing Point design. That's obviously them clutching at straws, and for some reason doesn't match the story they're trying to feed to fans, via the media.

    • DeletedScenes312

      DeletedScenes312

      2 maanden geleden

@David Wilcox I'm not sure which of my posts you're replying to here. As far as the regulations go, if taken literally, and to the letter, neither the front or rear ducts breach technical regulations, but both front and rear breach sporting regulations (if taken literally), as neither is an original Racing Point design, nor outsourced to a 3rd party with no other involvement in F1. The FIA granted an exception for the front ducts, based on their previous appearance on the RP19, which was seen as an oversight in the regulations (not a true grey area, but something that should have been foreseen, but wasn't). The decision was, to apply the regulations strictly to the letter, wouldn't have been fair or reasonable, in that case. There was no reason to grant any exception for the rear ducts, and doing so would have effectively made brake ducts not a listed part at all, and opened the door for any team to do almost anything they wanted.

    • David Wilcox

      David Wilcox

      2 maanden geleden

@DeletedScenes312 that's not true. The fronts are legal but the rear aren't? That's not in the regulations either, but an interpretation by the stewards.

    • DeletedScenes312

      DeletedScenes312

@Lewis McDonald The rules say it's illegal to USE other teams data, for listed parts. When you get the data isn't relevant. They could have got it 10 years ago, or the day before brake ducts became listed. Doesn't matter. You can't put that data into your software, when you're designing those parts. That's all there is to it.

DeletedScenes312 it amuses me that they never mentioned any CAD files when the comparisons between the Mercedes & their car was first raised. They stated that it was usual for teams to take high definition photos of rival cars to help develop their own cars. Now they are saying they had the data last year but never used it on the 2019 car, but decided that it would go on this years car. Would Mercedes have transferred their current cars details to Racing Point? It’s more likely that Mercedes gave details of the 2018 car to RP at the beginning of 2019, so they are probably running a two year old design on the RP.

MrAckers75 the FIA couldn’t find how they were circumventing the rules after months of examinations. They couldn’t punish Ferrari as they could find no breach of the rules, they didn’t have the “smoking gun” & Ferrari would not incriminate themselves by coming clean. The FIA had to do a deal for Ferrari for them to show how it exploited the rules & that information could then be used the to police the regulations for all engine manufacturers.

Copying something and changing the handwriting doesn't mean its all different and it is a clear advantage which must not be taken lightly.

I dont see how it's an advantage. Other teams should be quicker than this as this was the benchmark. Other teams not performing does not mean that Racing Point is doing something to gain an advantage. Because at the end of the day they have a small budget and by copying the merc of last year they have no chance of winning a championship and all the teams have knowledge about the pace of that car already

Robert Thomas we don’t know any of the details about the Ferrari engine fiasco, just that the FIA did a confidential settlement with Ferrari. Nobody knows the full details except the FIA & Ferrari, No fine or other punishments have been reviled to the public & all this discussion around the engines is just speculation. Oil burning would have been the easy find as there has to be a minimum oil level, just as there has to be enough fuel left to take a sample at the end of the race. I doubt that teams like Caterham, Manor, HRT, etc would have been able to afford the Hybrid engine packages or that the suppliers would have been able to provide enough packages, but if they were a Ferrari customer, they would have had the same engines as the works team. I don’t agree with the actions of Ferrari or RP, that said, it has always been the way for engineers to push the limits of legality & find grey areas to exploit.

    • Robert Thomas

      Robert Thomas

@shanekrickwood The FIA knew that something wasn't right with the Ferrari engine and electrics. Red Bull got done but under different circumstances afew seasons previous. When fuel burn was made illegal the wounded donkey, Alfa Romeo and Haas (customer teams) have gone backwards. It came out that they used radio interference to jam and alter the fuel flow meter to Ferrari's advantage but give the supposed correct readings to the FIA. So because of this Ferrari decided to pay a fine and also not let the FIA tell the other teams what Ferrari had been upto...... It's disgraceful on so many levels. Teams like Marussia and others could still be around if this cheating had been stopped earlier.....

Indeed! F1 shoots itself in the foot yet again ...why pull together for the good of the sport when one can push self-interest to the point of self-destruction? I can imagine Lawrance Stroll being the kind of person who might say "I'm sinking a fortune in this project, if you buggers aren't prepared to play fair I'm not prepared to play." Don't be too surprised if RP isn't on the grid in the near future. PS I swear F1 is populated to-to-bottom with people who have focused so hard on being the best at what they do they have forgotten to grow up! The whole thing has the atmosphere of the world's most dysfunctional school - populated either by nauseating brats who are too clever by half or self-aggrandizing idiots who having slept though their first sociology lesson think they know it all and won't shut up!

Who says that if they would be running lower positions they wouldn't have protested? And then still its no argument at all. Someone copies a car, is very quick, of course that's even more reason to protest. He can talk all he want this Stroll guy but what they did was copy a car instead of designing one themselves. It might very well be that the rules in the book were not 100% water tight defined but for me they just copied a car which lowers the value of the team and its performance quite a bit for me. I don't know how he wants to clear his name. They drive around in a Mercedes copy. Anyone can see that. They won't win my respect for that. And with this they will kick off a trend that nobody wants to see in F1. Its not good for the sport. I will never see them as a top team this way no matter how good they perform. Let them design a front running car themselves and they can be up there with the big boys.

@Dani no one cares about your respect or lack thereof. This is about rules changes and grey areas that Racing Point exploited. Copying the car is mentioned in the ruling as being legal. The weird line between the front and rear parts is nonsense and not in the rules. I don't understand, how is it preferable for a team like Williams to drive around at the back of the field. Is it better for the sport for teams to have zero chance against top teams. It makes for boring races.

    • Dani

      Dani

      2 maanden geleden

@David Wilcox I just explained. Even if it's legal they will always be a copy to me so not a team which I personally will have the same amount of respect for as a team that designs a car themselves and suddenly is there at the front. Like if Mclaren or Renault would stand there with their own design than THAT would be an impressive performance. But with this RP.. It's just different.

This kind of drama when the team passed every scrutiny, is for sure going to kill F1. On track should do the talking not the court's or group's of moaning team principles. I hope this fine and point deduction gets reversed, and if you look at what ferrari were doing last year and got away scot free, this is an absolute mess. It would put any investment or investor's off joining F1 100%

DeletedScenes312 yeah but the thing is they made plans based of photographs, if they can’t prove they bought the plans from AMG then it’s not illegal imo. Either way you can’t deny the fact that if RB or Ferrari did the same the financial repercussions wouldn’t be the same. + if the fia would have told them to change the break they would have been out of the championship for a long time and that’s something Stroll wouldn’t tolerate (imo)

The FIA ( ferrari International assistance ) team, need to make the rules more clarified. And Lawrence Stroll is absolutely 💯 % right to feel the way he does. This type of moaning from teams like Renault and Williams etc, will destroy the grid and investment into the sport. It also ruins the sport for the fan's. Build better car's and talk on track, not in court rooms. F1 has hit record lows in viewer's ( Thanks greedy Sky ) and interest over the last 4 decades. These days if a driver's hair is out of place they moan like fk about it and all get lawyers onto it immediately

The FIA just with that statement have cut their own throats and made themselves look stupid, Clair Williams summed it up if it’s illegal they have to take it off if it’s not illegal they can race well they haven’t taken anything off so what does that say.

Just remember that the FIA failed to find out how the Ferrari engine was illegal, they had to give Ferrari amnesty (Private settlement) to show how they circumvented the regulations. Of course Ferrari didn’t develop a new engine for this season as it wasn’t possible, they had to use the existing spec without the loophole systems.

I'm not convinced that the lack of regulation on the transition of parts from last year is an oversight by FIA. It makes more sense to me that they saw it happening, but they were fine with it. I mean, what could they do, tell the teams to throw away their old parts and forget the schematics even though they legally bought those? The problem is, i think, FIA didn't expect the team who would take advantage of that to be this competitive and the rest of the teams protesting it, so they didn't bother regulating this particular point. But now it happened, so FIA tries to please everybody (as Stroll said) by deciding to punish but not really punish Racing Point...
