"We need a sport that represents the outer world" | Lewis Hamilton: My Race | Full interview

SUBSCRIBE ► bit.ly/SubscribeSkyF1
Lewis Hamilton has just become Formula 1's new record holder for race victories and could, within a space of the next fortnight, also equal the record number of championships with a seventh world title.
The accolade of the most successful driver in the sport's history awaits but 2020 is about more than just simply sporting achievement for F1's leading star, as Hamilton explains in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News.
As part of Black History Month, Hamilton spoke at length to Mike Wedderburn about the powerful stand he has taken against global racial injustice and the Mercedes driver's desire to help make his own industry a more diverse place into the future.

Do we need more white players in the NFL or the NBA? Fewer Latinos in MLB? More Asians in the Tour de France? If you look at everything through the racial spectrum, you will constantly find “injustices”. Let the best rise to the top and enjoy the amazing achievements of these athletes, regardless of race.

Why are all so surprised what going on the USA with Policy Brutality against BLACK PEOPLE. Lewis when you next in the United Arab Emirates, come connect with your fellow black brother from the UK whom has worked all over the world and I give you the template of how we as a Black People need to embrace a Black Nation and put the foundations in place for the next generation of black children... THE F1 GRID THEN WILL HAVE 4-5 Black Racing Car Drivers in F1 for 2035. Delroyal Arthur Davis

The main barrier is the astronomical costs involved in getting started in motorsports! And the link between race and relative poverty, which then comes back to education. And at it's root creating an interest in Motorsport at an early age within minorities, then making the sport more attainable for all levels, talent over wealth.. However.... Funny when things like salary caps are muted...which would be a starting point towards this process, Hamilton seems less interested in equality... because it will damage his already bulging deep pockets..

Growing up in Los Angeles a car town, with races from flathead rails to drag racing every w/e I know Black and Brown teen car enthusiast dream of NASCAR but F1 isn’t on their radar. With only 1 US F1 in Austin, there’s no road to exposure to F1 on any level. Nearby Long Beach is losing its Grand Prix with Toyota moving to Texas. With so much talent in towns like L A, from auto design, engineering, data analysis etc etc from the Asian, Black and Latin communities here, FIA or successful teams like MercedesAMGF1 could facilitate apprentice programs in the US. Based on that matriculation, qualified people of color could apply for openings on the various teams.

    • Jenn

      Jenn

      21 dag geleden

Sports and Politics have always been hand in hand. Sports and sportsmen have always been at the forefront, the models. In the 90s, F1 drivers boycotted the South African GP because of segregation. What did you have to say about that? Spartacus fought for freedom. Mohammed Ali didn’t want to go to war in Vietnam... At all time in History sports have been linked to politics and vice versa. Politics use sports to suit their agenda, let the sportsmen use politics too.

You don’t need to go to Africa to find corruption. Just open your eyes. Your government is probably corrupted too and is the one corrupting and taking ressources from Africa. Now you’re asking a racing driver to give his own money... If money was the solution to every problems then rich countries wouldn’t have problems.

@Z1_.Trappy The word needs to be spread? I think you're missing the point. Its all you hear in every single type of media outlet there is. The " word" is spread enough. Athletes should keep their personal and political agenda out of sports. If they want to make a change for whatever they care about do it privately, actions speak louder then words.

Usual Hamilton bullshit, he says people of colour, he means black. Dosnt even notice the Asian, Indian, Spainish, Phillipino, and countless other nationalitys in the paddock. The bottom line is anyone from any background interested in motorsport will make it there if they have the determination and skill to. There are countless schoolerships and sponsorships out there that go to the best candidate with the right mindset to help finnancialy. If you want more 'people of colour' in motorsport then they need to apply themself to be the best option when opportunity knocks. If Lewis wants equality drop the BLM message and stick to the End Racism one the rest of the grid supports, fighting for one ethnic group is NOT equality.

Lewis has come above racing soo much..! He doesn't even talk about it as much now.. He trains hard -- physically, mentally, studies race-craft race-tracks and he goes into the Merc weekends in - out -- be the fastest -- wins pole, wins races, wins championships, win titles -- break records. This part of his life has become so regular - that it has taken the backseat. Now he's more motivated to these equality initiatives, trying to bring changes that affects athletes, sports, companies/corporates and humanity itself. **hats-off** to him.

I got to witness an amazing moment in history with 92 wins over Schumacher. Not some white guy. Hamilton you speak of diversity there are hundreds of different nationalities in F1, that's diversity! Please stop making this about color. BLM is a terrorist group. They don't care about people. Stand up fir everyone's rights INCLUDING Black or Women or Children or Asian or whatever. Interesting interview in the week where F1 announce that they are going to tart themselves out and stage a Saudi Arabia grand prix. A country whose leaders order the murder of their critics, that has no F1 heritage, no significant F1 fan base, few women and human rights and that has no tourism. Bernie Ecclestone would do a deal with the devil, and often did if it meant enriching his pocket, with the new owners his legacy carries on as they seem to think that they can absolve themselves from all responsibilities while partnering with toxic countries. Lewis Hamilton might be fighting for diversity and F1 happy to pay lip service, but behind the facade it is business as usual.

Great interview, even greater interviewer. Appreciated that one! BUT, to get into Motorsport there is just one thing that really matters, MONEY. Most "white" people can't afford to get in to even if they wish to do so. I don't know why in F1 there such few "black" people around. But I fundamently believe that it is a matter of interest. Today "black" people have established deeply in different sports. Don't get me wrong, but I can't approve to a 100% that the difference is clearly based on the color of your skin.

Instead of showing what black people can do and to inspire young black kids he plays the victim

@Rye 25 So why are you even saying this then, are you void of any kinda of sense, you're like the rest of the sheep who heard something said about someone, and so you just follow despite being able to use your own brain, (if you have one), to understand more.

I think Lewis is in a position where he now feels he is in a place in his career that he doesn’t have to worry that standing up for others means he will loose his seat. He should be commended for using his stature to represent the black community, we all have thoughts and feelings, and everyone contributes towards the world however small or large, be kind to each other, take the time to consider others feelings, we are only here on Earth for a short time, let’s all live together. He mentioned big companies not taking a stand, look at Nike, they backed the NFL player Colin Kaepernick after he took the knee during the national anthem. Hopefully more will let down the barriers

Brilliant interview. As the casual murder of George Floyd convulsed the West, the communication and suspicion appeared to flow almost entirely in one direction. So I decided to write to my white friend to make the following points: "We met in London in 1993 and forged a bond of friendship that transcended race, colour, culture and nationality. "Our disparate cultural, social and political experiences were so sharply contrasted, having been raised and weaned in different continents that were literally black and white in all essential intents and purposes. "Two young men in their early twenties, highly driven by ambition not just to succeed but to excel, we nevertheless devoted ourselves to the other stuff in life that led to exhilarating ends, such as sports, clubbing, movies, dinning out, cars, you name it. "Despite all we have achieved in our respective lives, I still take particular pleasure in my success in persuading you to pitch your tent with the Arsenal while I in turn owe that life-long passion and commitment to the effervescent and iconoclastic Ian Wright. "The most outstanding memory of our friendship for me remains the decency of humanity that I encountered in your character. That in our nearly 3 decades of close friendship, punctuated of course by my long absence now from the United Kingdom, I have never observed you exhibit any form of racial prejudice or bias either directly or indirectly, conscious or unconscious, towards me or towards any other non-white person. "This is remarkable, and not a sentiment I would express about any other white friend or white colleague or white classmate of mine. Indeed I would not express a similar sentiment about any of my Indian friends. "As someone who worked for more than 3 years at the UK Section of Amnesty International and attended the London School of Economics also for 3 years, those acclaimed bastions of liberalism harboured a lot of surprises for me, and not always to a positive end. "I needed to make this statement to you in the light of the current racial ferment in the West so that as you hopefully set these examples of broad-mindedness, tolerance and undogmatic disposition for your beloved children, you may happily reflect on this mirror that I have placed before you. "I have absolutely no business thanking you for being a decent human being. The threshold of decency isn’t really that high but most of us fail to attain it - indeed most of us fail to even attempt to scale it. But I have every business in telling you that you got this right. "You are not perfect, Simon. Nor am I. Nor is anyone. But I am incredibly proud of this specific aspect of your character." Those who thrive in the sewer of hate are small minded and incapable of self development. Period.
